Motion Industries is staying on the acquisition trail, announcing a West Coast bolt-on addition Friday afternoon.
The Birmingham, AL-based company — No. 6 on Industrial Distribution's 2017 Big 50 List — has acquired Santa Rosa, CA-based Power Industries Inc., also known as Santa Rosa MRO, in a deal completed May 1. Terms were not disclosed.
Founded in 1951, Power Industries specializes as an MRO distributor of parts that include bearings, power transmission, fluid power and hose and fittings. Serving industries that include wineries, food and beverage, water treatment, forest products, construction and manufacturing, the company's factory specialists assist customers with cost savings and productivity in their applications.
Power Industries shares locations with two Napa Auto Parts stores in Santa Rosa and Napa, with the acquisition boosting Motion Industries' footprint and service capabilities in the San Francisco Bay area.
"The industry and product knowledge of Power Industries employees will be a big plus for our business, particularly in Northern California," said Tim Breen, Motion Industries’ president and CEO. "We welcome them to the Motion family, and look forward to achieving great things together."
The deal marks Motion’s second acquisition of a California company in the last year. Los Angeles-based Numatic Engineering joined the Motion Industries team in August 2017.
The Power Industries acquisition adds to a flurry of activity for Motion Industries over the past year. In June 2017, the company opened a new distribution center in Grand Prairie, TX, near Dallas. Following, the Numatic Engineering acquisition, Motion then completed the acquisition of Cedar Rapids, IA Apache Hose & Belting on Nov. 1, boosting its industrial rubber fabrication capabilities. This past March, Motion's parent company, Genuine Parts Company, announced that fellow GPC subsidiary EIS Inc. (No. 22 on ID's Big 50) was merged into Motion as the company's Electrical Specialties Group, effective. Jan. 2. Meanwhile, Motion is set to open a new Pacific Northwest distribution center later this spring in Auburn, WA, about 25 miles south of Seattle.
GPC's 2018 first quarter financial report showed that Motion Industries' Q1 sales totaled $1.55 billion, up. 8.3 percent year-over-year, with operating profit of $112.2 million up 10.0 percent. Comparable sales increased approximately 5 percent.
