Core & Main Inc. announced Friday that it has named a new chairman of its board following the retirement of its former CEO.

Stephen LeClair, who is ending his tenure as executive chair and board chairman, will be succeeded as chairman by James Castellano, who previously served as the company’s lead independent director. LeClair remained board chairman after departing as CEO last March.

“On behalf of the board of Core & Main, I would like to thank Steve for his many years of service to the organization,” Castellano said in the announcement. “Steve served as CEO and a member of the board from the time Core & Main became an independent company in 2017 through March 2025, and as board chair since 2024.”

Core & Main also said Friday that former American Water Works Company CEO M. Susan Hardwick has joined the board, where she will serve on the talent and compensation committee. Other board changes included James Hope as chair of the audit committee and Robert Buck’s appointment to the audit committee.

“Susan brings valuable leadership experience in the water industry to Core & Main’s board, which will be instrumental as we continue to execute our growth strategy,” said CEO Mark Witkowski. “Her perspective and experience will further strengthen the board as we advance our strategic priorities.”

Core & Main is the no. 6 distributor on ID's latest Big 50 list.
