MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A Memphis plant that makes solar energy panels has unveiled a large solar array to help power it.

Sharp Manufacturing Co. of America dedicated a 12,000-square-foot solar collector on the roof of its plant to celebrate Earth Day on Thursday.

The Commercial Appeal reported the nearly 800 panels will generate 150 kilowatts of electricity. Coupled with a 50-kilowatt system the company put up earlier, that would be enough energy to power about 15 homes. Sharp personnel vice president T.C. Jones said it would provide a "very small" portion of the power the plant consumes.

Sharp says it got a 30 percent federal tax credit and a state grant covered up to 40 percent of the cost. The total cost of the project wasn't available Thursday.
