Fastenal announced Monday that it will break ground next week on its new, larger distribution hub in suburban Atlanta.

The Minnesota-based fastener and industrial supply distributor originally announced plans to replace its Atlanta-area distribution center in the release of its latest financial results in January. The company said this week that the new “Southeast U.S. regional operations and logistics center,” to be located in Carrollton, Georgia, would be "significantly" larger than its current Atlanta site when it opens next spring, and could eventually be expanded to more than 900,000 square feet.

In addition, the company said the new campus would feature enhanced material handling equipment, improved processing software and other “next-generation warehouse technologies” to increase both picking speed and storage capacity.

"The new site gives us dramatically expanded capacity," Fastenal Senior Regional Operations Manager Greg Campbell said in a statement. "It also offers close proximity to educational institutions, giving us a great pipeline for talent development and recruitment."

The Carrollton facility will the third iteration of Fastenal’s Atlanta-area campus: the company opened its first “AHUB” in 1993 and relocated to its current site in 2003. The company currently employs 300 people at its Atlanta complex, and officials said that it plans to expand the staff over the next five years to accommodate the larger facility. Fastenal did not provide an estimate of how many jobs it expects to add.

The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for March 24 at 2:30 p.m. at the Old Airport Road Development in Carrollton.

Fastenal ranks at no. 4 on ID’s latest Big 50 list.
