Winona, MN - Fastenal Company released the numbers for their July sales month, noting that net sales rose 7.8% year over year.
Net sales in July of 2013 were $282,261 (Dollar amounts in thousands), up from 261,796 in the same month of 2012. The daily sales were $12,830, up 2.9% from 12,466 in 2012.
Commentary on sales growth and end markets:
End market (daily sales change) - During the month, manufacturing customers grew 2.1% and non-residential construction customers contracted 0.1%.
Sales growth - The change in currencies in foreign countries (primarily Canada) relative to the United States dollar reduced daily sales growth rate by 0.2% during the month. Sales during July 2013 were severely impacted by the timing of July 4th. The July 4th holiday landed on a Thursday in 2013 versus a Wednesday in 2012. This resulted in a very weak business day on Friday, July 5, 2013. After completing the first week of July 2013, delivered and billed daily sales were down 9.3% from July 2012 (there were four business days in both periods) and were down 21.7% from the first week of June 2013 (there were five business days in the first week of June 2013).
Fastenal has opened 34 stores in 2013. The company now has 2,678 in operation.
