ICP Staff Attends Valor Games Career Fair In Chicago

The event was held alongside the second annual Valor Games, where more than 150 ex-military, disabled athletes competed in events such as shot-put, archery, and rowing. ICP was there with a booth to raise awareness about the variety of career options available in the field of industrial distribution and to encourage job seekers to post their resumes to the newly launched ICP Job Board.

Chicago, IL—August 21, 2012— More than 1,000 job seekers found their way to the Veterans Career Hiring Event held at Chicago’s Soldier Field on Monday, August 13, 2012. The Career Hiring Event was held in conjunction with the second annual Valor Games, where more than 150 ex-military, disabled athletes competed in events such as shot-put, archery, rowing and recumbent cycling. Industrial Careers Pathway® was there with a booth to raise awareness about the variety of career options available in the field of industrial distribution and to encourage job seekers to post their resumes to the newly launched ICP Job Board at http://jobs.idcareers.org.

Among those searching for career information was Brenda Bernt from Tampa, Fla. Bernt’s husband, a disabled veteran, was among the athletes competing in the Valor Games, but in between events, she scoured the Career Hiring Event for information for her 20-year-old son, Nikolaus, who has been caregiver and support system during her husband’s recuperation. Bernt said the Tampa Bay Buccaneer’s had recently remodelled her home so that she and her husband can manage better on their own without Nikolaus’ help, and now he is searching for a job. Learning about the many careers available in the field of industrial distribution from Industrial Careers Pathway was eye-opening for her.

Derek Southern, a former Marine, was looking for a new job after funding dried up for his former position as intake coordinator of a non-profit organization in Chicago. “Most of the places ask you to post a resume.  I haven’t heard anything, but I think I will soon,” he said optimistically of the various exhibitors. Southern posted his resume at http://jobs.idcareers.org in the hopes of getting into a field where his Marine Corps service, which involved logistics, customer service and order filling, might have helped prepare him well. “I really like that kind of work, and I have a solid background with machinery,” he said. Learning about the careers available to him in industrial distribution was helpful, he said, adding the job board will be a great asset for his job search as the companies advertising there are offering solid jobs with good pay.

Participating in events such as the career exposition at Soldier Field in Chicago is just one of the many ways Industrial Careers Pathway is working to get the word out about the many opportunities available in the fields of industrial distribution and manufacturing. All of these employers are looking for new employees to replace a workforce that is beginning to retire in large numbers as the Baby Boom generation moves into its 60s.

Employers can search resumes on the Job Board for free after registering. Then, for a nominal fee, a contact may be made with a qualified employee, like Derek Southern, who is eager to land a new job, possibly in customer service or inside sales.

The new ICP Job Board is located directly at http://jobs.idcareers.org and is also available through the Jobs tab at the ICP website, www.industrialcareerspathway.org.
