It seems like every other week Amazon.com is announcing plans for a new fulfillment center, as the e-tailer giant continues to bring its products closer to its customers and enable faster delivery.
But that map only shows states where Amazon DCs are up and running. It doesn't include states that will soon have a DC. The company has 50 operational distribution centers as of early February, according to thenewstribune.com.
Here is a rundown of Amazon's latest announcements regarding new distribution and fulfillment centers:
- Fall River, Massachusetts: According to multiple reports, Amazon announced last Thursday that it has reached a tax agreement with Fall River, MA, and that the company is interested in building a 1 million-square foot facility to store "large-scale" items. The distribution center is expected to create 500 jobs by the fall of 2016. Two-thirds of the facility and land would be located in adjacent Freetown. An approval vote from the state is expected to happen next month, with proposed groundbreaking to happen this summer.
- Robbinsville, New Jersey: In July 2014, Amazon opened a 1.2 million-square foot facility in Robbinsville, NJ, which created 1,500 jobs. Last week it was announced that the facility will add an additional 800 jobs to meet customer demand.
- Louisville, Kentucky: WDRB.com reports that Integrity Staffing Solutions is looking to hire 2,000 temporary employees to work at the Amazon distribution centers in the Louisville area, primarily due to an increase in demand for apparel goods.
- Twin Cities, Minnesota: According to Bizjournals.com, Amazon is in negotiations to purchase a 66-acre plot in Shakopee, MN's Shenandoah Business Park, roughly 25 miles Southwest of downtown Minneapolis. The company reportedly plans to develop a distribution center on the property that would create hundreds of jobs, and as many 1,000 during the peak holiday season. It would be Amazon's first facility in Minnesota. Amazon started collecting sales tax in the state on Oct. 1, 2014.
- Baltimore, Maryland: A 1 million-square foot Amazon distribution center is expected to open in Southeast Baltimore, MD at the end of March, employing 1,000 people. The company opened a smaller sorting center there in October.
- Kenosha, Wisconsin: Amazon is nearing completion of a 1 million square-foot distribution center in Kenosha, WI that will create an estimated 1,600 jobs. Bizjournals.com reported last week that the project generated $157 million in spending last year. The report says hiring didn't pick up until fall 2014, and at the end of 2014 Amazon counted only 30 employees. The facility is expected to open with 1,000 employees. The company opened a neighboring smaller sorting facility late last year.
- Chicago, Illinois: In late October, Amazon announced plans for its first distribution facility in Illinois, vowing to create to create more than 1,000 full-time jobs and $75 million in investment in the Chicagoland area. The company started collecting sales tax from Illinois shoppers on Feb. 1. Amazon plans to build several facilities in the state by 2017, including the first this year.
- Dupont and Kent, Washington: Amazon celebrated the formal opening of its new DuPont, WA, fulfillment center on Feb. 13. The center actually opened last summer, but the event marked Amazon's official opening to show off some of its latest and greatest technology, led by an army of Kiva Robots. Amazon is currently building its fourth Puget Sound fulfillment center in nearby Kent, adjacent to a sorting facility there.
Last August, global logistics and supply chain consultancy MWPVL said Amazon has 59 fulfillment and distribution centers in North America (including outsourced 3PL locations), totaling 44.7 million square feet of space.
