Flex Machine Tools Acquires Michigan Counterpart

Ohio manufacturer Flex Machine Tools announced Friday that it has acquired suburban Detroit machine tool counterpart Tarus.

Flex officials said that Tarus is one of the few manufacturers remaining in the U.S. that designs and produces “exceptionally large CNC machine tools.” Tarus supplies customers across the heavy industry, mold and die, automotive, energy, and aerospace and defense sectors; it is also, officials added, “the world leader in clay model machine solutions for automobile design studios.”


The transaction officially closed on July 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Flex officials said that Tarus would continue to operate under its existing name and from its current facility in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

“Demand for large, precision-machined components is growing faster than we can produce them today, and this acquisition helps us close that gap,” Don Kemper, the president of Flex Machine Tools and Tarus, said in the announcement. “It gives us greater control over quality, cost and delivery, while making us more vertically integrated, resilient and competitive.”

"The acquisition allows us to manufacture more of what we build here at home, using American-made machines, while strengthening our business and American manufacturing,” said Flex CEO Nick Kennedy.
