Much like the handful of years that preceded it, 2025 wasn’t known for any one, key operational imperative.
Instead of clarity and direction, the market brought soft demand coupled with variables like tariffs, supply chain volatility and an overall higher cost of doing business — a hornet’s nest of challenges that could only be addressed by a multi-faceted response.
With this came a need for operational discipline that the best leaders in distribution used to widen their net: instead of bearing down on acquisition targets alone, many spent the year also reviewing organic growth opportunities, responding to pricing intelligence requirements, improving supply chain and logistics capabilities and investing in infrastructure.

Technology, in particular, has helped grease the wheels. In recent years, Big 50 companies increasingly pointed to their investments in digital transformation, and this year, it’s been a focal point. Multiple companies highlighted their exploration of and spending on AI as they look to offset labor and cost pressures.
And as a foundation for these technological ambitions, we still see the basic blocking and tackling of distribution: customer service, product depth and technical expertise. These efforts were enough to keep many distributors treading water – at a minimum – while many more improved their prospects, albeit gradually. With 2026 well underway, new bright spots have emerged as distributors look to new and growing markets (electrification and data centers, for example) that offer fresh runway even while challenges remain.
