Report: Fastenal Planning Major Expansion For NC Distribution Hub

An eight to nine year expansion project will increase the company's distribution center in High Point, NC to nearly 300,000 feet, while daily orders have already ramped up.

According to a report Monday by the Triad Business Journal, Fastenal is planning to add 20 new employees and 120,000 square feet to its distribution facility in High Point, NC, to support increased demand.

The report quotes Fastenal regional operations manager Chris Patrick saying the facility will expand in phases to 295,000 square feet over the next eight or nine years. A total cost for the project was not given.

Fastenal – No. 12 on Industrial Distribution's 2014 Big 50 List – currently has about 175,000 square feet of warehouse space in a 230,000 square foot building in High Point. The report said Newell Rubbermaid rents 60,000 square feet of Fastenal's office space.

The report says the first wave of the expansion project will add 20,000 to 30,000 square feet over the next two years, with another 30,000 added two to three years after. Meanwhile, Fastenal recently added 20 staff members and will add another 15 to 20 over the next six weeks for distribution work.

The report says the project is adding 15 dock doors to Fastenal's facility to help service its Atlanta and Pennsyvlania distribution centers. Fastenal's typical 9,000 to 10,000 daily orders in the region was increased in march to support inventory for those two DCs.

The Triad Business Journal quotes Patrick, "That's adding another 2,000 to 3,000 orders to our daily workload. To support that, our inventory has ramped up considerably. We are adding thousands and thousands and thousands of additional (stock-keeping units).”

Ace/Avant began the dock expansion work in February and should be finished by the end of this month.
