In September 2014 compared with August 2014, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector fell by 1.8 percent in the euro area (EA18) and by 0.9 percent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In August 2014, production in construction grew by 0.7 percent in the euro area and remained stable in the EU28.
In September 2014 compared with September 2013, production in construction fell by 1.7 percent in the euro area and by 0.4 percent in the EU28.
The decrease of 1.8 percent in production in construction in the euro area in September 2014, compared with August 2014, is due to building construction falling by 1.6 percent and civil engineering by 3.0 percent.
In the EU28, the decrease of 0.9 percent is due to building construction falling by 0.8 percent and civil engineering by 1.3 percent.
Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in production in construction were observed in Slovenia (-8.6 percent), Italy (-5.4), Sweden (-3.2) and France (-2.3), and the highest increases in Romania (+7.9 percent), the Czech Republic (+2.7) and Bulgaria (+2.4).
The decrease of 1.7 percent in production in construction in the euro area in September 2014, compared with September 2013, is due to building construction falling by 1.2 percent and civil engineering by 2.1 percent.
In the EU28, the decrease of 0.4 percent is due to civil engineering falling by 1.9 percent, while building construction rose by 0.3 percent.
Among Member States for which data are available, decreases in production in construction were registered in Italy (-10.6 percent), Portugal (-5.2), France (-3.4), the Netherlands (-3.1) and Germany (-1.5), and the highest increases in Spain (+9.1 percent), the Czech Republic (+8.2), Hungary (+7.3), Slovenia (+6.2) and Bulgaria (+5.8).
