Fastenal Daily Sales Up Nearly 10% In May As Store Hiring Continues

Fastenal's May was its best month for year-over-year daily sales growth since January 2015, while it made strong gains in full-time store personnel headcount.

Winona, MN-based Fastenal posted its May sales figures on Tuesday, showing continued strong growth that exceeded April's.

The company's daily sales of $17.43 million grew 9.7 percent year-over-year and outplaced April's 8.9 percent growth. May daily sales gew 9.5 percent in the U.S.

Fastenal's overall May sales grew 14.9 percent, but this past month had one more selling day than in May 2016.

Fastenal's May daily sales growth to manufacturing customers grew 8.1 percent year-over-year, while non-residential construction sales improved by 7.2 percent. Those figures follow April growth of 7.1 and 6.6 percent, respectively.

The company's recent acquisition of Manufacturer's Supply Company (Mansco) — finalized March 31 — powered considerable growth in Fastenal's May fastener sales. The company's Fastener sales increased 6.7 percent year-over-year in May, while all other sales increased 11.3 percent. That follows April growth of 6.0 and 10.7 percent, respectively.

Fastenal — No. 10 on Industrial Distribution's Big 50 List â€” opened two new stores during May and didn't close any, ending the month with a total store count of 2,484, down 19 from the end of 2016. 

Fastenal ended May with a total company headcount of 19,996, which includes 118 emplyees added from the Mansco acquisition. That count is up 372 from the end of 2016, and up 113 from the end of April. The vast majority of the May headcount increase was in full-time store personnel, where the company added 164 employees. Of the 372 employees Fastenal has net added so far in 2017, nearly 88 percent have been store personnel.
