Amazon on Thursday announced plans to install solar energy panels on 50 of its warehouses around the world over the next four years.

The e-retail giant expects to complete installation of the first 15 panel systems in the U.S. this year, which will generate up to 41 megawatts of power. In favorable conditions, the buildings could generate up to 80 percent of their own energy needs each year.

The first 15 projects will be deployed at warehouses in California, Delaware, Maryland, Nevada and New Jersey.

β€œWe are putting our scale and inventive culture to work on sustainability β€” this is good for the environment, our business and our customers," said Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations Dave Clark. "By diversifying our energy portfolio, we can keep business costs low and pass along further savings to customers."

Amazon said that it was the country's top corporate purchaser of renewable energy last year and that projects announced to date will generate 3.6 million megawatts of renewable energy.
