Fastenal Daily Sales Up 2.1% In July

Fastenal posted daily sales growth for the fifth month out of seven so far, while fastener sales continued their decline and non-fastener sales continued healthy growth.

Winona, MN-based Fastenal â€” No. 12 on Industrial Distribution's 2015 Big 50 List â€” reported its July sales on Thursday, led by a slight uptick in daily sales growth.

The company posted total sales of $310 million in July, down 7.2 percent year-over-year. But factoring in July 2015's two additional selling days, daily sales were actually up 2.1 percent this past month.

That daily sales growth was a rebound from June's flat sales, and adds to what has been an overall positive 2016 for Fastenal in terms of daily sales growth. Here's how the past 13 months of Fastenal's daily sales growth has looked like:

July daily sales to manufacturing customers increased by 1.0 percent year-over-year, while sales to non-residential construction customers decreased by 0.7 percent.

July daily sales of fasteners products declined by 2.6 percent year-over-year, while sales of all other products increased by 5.0 percent.

Fastenal opened two new stores in July, bringing its year-to-date. In the company's Q2 fiscal report on July 12, the company said it expects to open 30 to 45 new store throughout 2016. Fastenal's total store count at the end of July was 2,607.

Fastenal's total employee headcount at the end of July was 20,214, up 3 percent year-over-year. After increasing its selling headcount by 2.7 percent from May to June, that count — 13,196 — dipped by 1.9 percent from June to July. Year-to-date, Fastenal has lowered its total selling personnel count by 507.
