Fastenal May Sales Flat As Sales Hiring Continues

Fastenal's May sales were down 6 percent compared to April's, though the company has added more than 1,000 full-time sales personnel so far this year.

Fastenal – No. 12 on Industrial Distribution's 2014 Big 50 List – reported its May 2015 financials on Wednesday, showing relatively flat sales and a continued hiring boost company-wide.

Fastenal had monthly sales of $314.4 million, a 0.3 percent increase year-over-year. That figure was down from April's sales of $334.5 million, though April had 22 selling days, compared to May's 20. Daily sales in May increased 5.3 percent to $15.7 million.

May sales to manufacturing customers increased 4.1 percent, while sales to non-residential construction customers ticked up 1.0 percent.

Store count at the end of May was 2,627, down 60 stores from May 2014. The company opened three new stores last month, bringing its year-to-date total to five. It had opened 12 new stores in the first five months of 2014.

Fastenal's hiring push was evident again, as the company increased its total full-time equivalent personnel count by 40 in May 2015 to 19.312. Full-time selling personnel count increased 135 to 12,221. The company has net added 1,036 full-time selling personnel so far this year. Full-time distribution personnel decreased by 32 in May to 2,246. That figure is relatively unchained year-to-date from the 2,225 distribution personnel at the end of 2014.
