Motor Manufacturer Nidec Makes 2 Acquisitions

The transactions strengthen Nidec's global presence, adding a foothold in the electrical pump business in Germany, and electric motor operations in China.

KYOTO, Japan — Nidec Corporation announced two acquisitions on Thursday, stating it has agreed to acquire 100 percent of the shares of Gerate- und Pumpenbau GmbH (GPM), as well as certain operating assets of China Tex Mechanical & Engineering Co.

The GPM addition was made through Nidec's subsidiary, Nidec Motors & Actuators (Germany). GPM develops, manufactures and sells pumps and modules for automobiles. It is one of the leading automotive pump Tier 1 suppliers in the European market. With the acquisition, Nidec expects to further expand its electrical pump business by combining the company's motor technology with GPM's pump technology. In addition, the company aims to maximize synergies in making power-pack-type electrical pumps by utilizing electronic control technology of Nidec Elesys Corporation in a trend towards electrification.

Through this transaction, the company expects to further transform its business model from one based solely on motors to one based on modularization/systematization and to accelerate its shift to high value-added businesses.

China Tex is a Chica-based electric motor and drive manufacturer, with the acquisition made through Nidec Motor Co. Nidec aims to boost its presence in switched reluctance (SR) motors and drives, and to create a foothold for Nidec Industrial Solutions (NIS) business in China.

The company has endeavored to strengthen its commercial/industrial motor business as one of its strategically important business areas, where Nidec Motor Corporation (formerly, Emerson Electric Co.'s motors and controls business, "NMC"), which the Company acquired in September 2010, has been the primary operating subsidiary.

Entering the Chinese SR motors and drives market is a critical step for Nidec's global SR business strategy. The combination of China Tex MEE's position in the Chinese SR motors and drives market and Nidec's global position in the SR technologies enables Nidec to further accelerate SR business growth and serve customers in all three continents: Americas, Asia and Europe.

In addition to completing the global SR business strategy for Nidec, the target will strengthen Nidec Industrial Solutions (NIS) presence in China by serving as the base for developing and manufacturing applicable NIS products lines. This acquisition is an important step towards the future success of NIS in China.
