Warehousing Adds 3K Jobs In November; Factory Jobs Down 4K

Undoubtedly helped by the retail holiday hiring rush, warehousing continued to make solid gains last month, while durable goods manufacturing saw its job numbers fall by 6,000.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its November employment report on Friday, showing that total nonfarm employment increased by 178,000  during the month and the unemployment rate declined to 4.6 percent from 4.9 percent in October.

Factory jobs were down 4,000 during November, with durable goods down 6,000 and nondurable goods up 2,000.

  • Fabricated metal products jobs were down 1,600
  • Machinery jobs were down 3,900
  • Transportation equipment jobs were down 1,300
  • Plastics and rubber products jobs were down 2,200
  • The biggest gain was in food manufacturing (+1,600) 

Wholesale trade gained 2,800 jobs in November, with durable goods adding 1,300 and nondurable goods losing 2,500.

  • Warehouse and storage added 3,100 jobs in November, following October's gain of 3,300. The past two months were undoubtedly helped by retailers boosting headcounts for the holiday season.
  • Building material and garden supply stores added 500 jobs, while truck transportation added 1,100.

Construction added 19,000 jobs during November, following October's gain of 11,000. Residential construction added 4,900 jobs, with nonresidential up 300.

Mining added 2,100 jobs in November, with 1,100 added in oil and gas extraction, while non oil & gas mining added 1,300.
