Housing starts grew in April
May 16, 2008

The U.S. Commerce Department reported today that housing starts grew more than expected in April. Housing starts rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.032 million, far more than the 954.000 estimated for March or 939,000 expected by economists. The rise was due to a 36 percent increase in multi-family units. Single-family home starts dropped for the 12th straight month, down 1.7 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 692.000. That figure the lowest since January of 1991.
