Trade associations may co-locate their annual meetings
April 21, 2005

Several industry trade associations may co-locate their annual meetings to lower costs and increase attendance.

Brian Kundinger, president of the Fluid Power Distributors Assn., told attendees at the group’s annual convention in Palm Springs this week that FPDA will be meeting with representatives of the Association for High Technology Distribution, The Power Transmission Distributors Assn., the National Electronics Distributors Assn., and the System Control Integrators Assn. to discuss such a proposal.

Kathy DeMarco, executive director of FPDA, later told ID that co-locating the associations into one meeting locale would allow the associations to lower their hotel costs as well as provide top-notch speakers because the groups could pool their financial resources. Each association would still have their individual meetings but could also possibly hold joint sessions. Talks are only in their initial stages.

Dwindling membership and attendance at annual meetings have plagued many associations in recent years.

By the way, since I’ve been on the road, there’s been nothing but good news for Red Sox fans. Please feel sorry for George Steinbrenner. He’s upset the Yankees have the most expensive payroll in the major leagues and are playing worse than the Yankees in the Foxboro (Mass.) Youth baseball team. It just doesn’t get better than this.

Co-locating seems like a good idea. It would definitely decrease hotel costs and likely make the sessions more educational as well as successful. I wonder when a decision will be made?
