Layoffs on the rise
February 4, 2008

A new survey shows that job cuts increased nearly 70 percent last month compared to December.

The study, conducted by Challenger, Gray and Christmas, an international consulting firm, said planned layoffs increased to 74,986 from 44,416 in December. The housing and financial sectors were the hardest hit.

Job cuts still are below the 2001 recession levels, which averaged 140,000 per month from March to September.
