Rep group aligns with ISA
September 27, 2005

The decision on Sept. 9 to dissolve the NorthAmerican Industrial Representatives Assn. was a sad, but necessary one.

NIRA had been an effective organization, promoting the interests of professional independent manufacturer representatives. It had an excellent group of volunteer members who advanced the cause of the rep in today’s industrial marketplace.

Despite the group being disbanded,  NIRA President Dave Turpin said he’s pleased that NIRA is aligning itself with the Industrial Supply Assn.

“I strongly pushed our members to go in this direction,” Turpin said. “This is finally recognition of the important role reps play in the distribution channel.”

A few years ago, NIRA members had the opportunity to join the Industrial Supply Manufacturers Assn., have representation on its board, and attend the I.D.A./ISMA conventions. But when ISMA and I.D.A. merged into the Industrial Supply Assn. more than a year ago, NIRA members were unsure as to their role, if any, in the new organization. NIRA has been negotiating for some time with ISA about their future with that group.

But now Turpin points out that reps will become part of ISA’s booth program beginning at this November’s Business  EXPO in Chicago.

“This is extremely important for us. We’re going to be full voting members and we’re going to have a say in the program itself,” he said. “This is a very positive move for us.”

Reps will also have a seat on ISA’s board of directors.

ISA can use the additional members. Membership has been down in the past few years, and distributor attendance at recent conventions has not been strong. ISA is hoping that this year’s fall convention will draw a large number of attendees.
