Three men arrested in attempted copper theft
May 15, 2008

Three men were arrested during an attempted theft of copper from Consolidated Electrical Distributors in Jacksonville, Florida, according to a local television report.

Police said the three men had backed up a U-Haul against the rear of the CED building and cut through the barbed wire and razor-enforced fencing, according to First Coast News, a television station in Jacksonville. They allegedly made a hole in the concrete wall and started loading spools of copper wire onto the truck.

More than $12,000 worth of copper had been removed from the building when police arrived in response to a burglar alarm.

The three men were immediately arrested. One of the men reportedly worked at a scrap metal yard, according tom police.

It was the latest in a series of thefts around the country as the price of copper continues to increase.
