Distribution: A mature business
If there was any doubt that distribution is a mature industry, they would be erased based on the results of Industrial Distribution’s 61st Annual Survey of Distributor Operations.
The survey is based on the responses of more than 500 distributors from across the country. The results show shows that distributorships have been in business for an average of 46 years. More than two out of five distributorships have been in operation for more than 50 years.
Here is a breakout:
Years in business Percentage
60+years 29%
30-39 years 16%
50-59 years 13%
20-29 years 13%
40-49 years 11%
10-19 years 12%
Less than 10 6%
The largest percentage of distributors (32%) is located in the North Central region of the U.S.
