Now that the election is over...
November 8, 2006
The votes have been counted and the Democrats now have control over the House and possibly the Senate. The impact of this election will be felt for some time and gridlock is expected between a Republican administration and a Democratic-controlled Congress. Experts are already predicting there will be no landmark legislation coming out of the newly-elected Congress as both sides start to prepare for the presidential election in two years.
Of particular significance to distributors are two pieces of legislation: elimination of the so called “death tax” and passage of a bill that would allow associations to offer health plans. Proponents of these measures saw increasing support for those bills in the last Congressional session. But what happens now is anyone’s guess but support may be wavering as the result of this election. Stay tuned.
