Health Care woes
September 12, 2007

There’s good news and bad news on the health care front. The good news is that the average family premium grew “only” 6.1% in 2007, the fourth straight year companies’ premiums have dropped since soaring 14 percent in 2003. The bad news is that that health care premiums continue to rise faster than inflation and the prospects are that they will do the same next year.

Those are the conclusions of an annual study by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research and Educational Trust.

Premium for family health-care coverage have skyrocketed 78% since 2001.

“Every year health insurance becomes less affordable for families and businesses,” Kaiser President Drew Altman said. “Over the past six years, the amount families pay out of pocket for their share of premiums has increased by about $1,500.” The annual cost for family coverage through an employer health plan is now more than $12,000. The study found that workers now pay, on average, $3,281 their share of the cost of a family policy..

The percentage of employers offering health insurance remained at 60%, far lower than the 69 percentage of employers who offered health insurance in 2000.
