Construction distributors change hands: ProBuild Holdings buys CTX Builders Supply

Industrial Distribution staff -- Industrial Distribution, 10/8/2008 6:18:00 AM

Construction distributors ProBuild Holdings and CTX Builders Supply are set to merge, the Dallas Business Journal reported (registration required).

CTX, which is a division of Dallas-based home builder Centex Corp., manufactures panels, roof and floor trusses. The building materials distributor has six manufacturing and distribution centers in Carrollton and Buda, Texas, Albemarle, N.C., Plant City, Fla., Phoenix and Visalia, Calif. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

It’s the latest acquisition for Denver-based ProBuild, which seems unfazed by the continuing turmoil in the residential construction sector.

In March, CEO Paul Hylbert said the company would continue to make acquisitions in the face of the downturn. True to his word, the ProBuild bought up Racine, Wis.-based Big Buck Building Centers Inc., Jasper Lumber Co. of Jasper, Ga., a pair of New York-based truss manufacturers, Granger Lumber-Hardware Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla., and Columbus, Ohio-based Khempco Building Supply.

But ProBuild is not immune to the downward trend, which forced it to shutter three of its New York City-area locations and close a truss manufacturing facility in Jarrell, Texas, relocating its operations to another plant in Buda, Texas.
