PT/MC sales slip in July

Sales of power transmission and motion control products by distributors in the United States slipped 1.1 percent in July, compared to June 2008, according to the Power Transmission Distributors Assn.Although U.S. distributors’ sales rose 10.2 percent compared with July 2007, the confidence index charting their optimism about the economy fell 0.2 points to 5.4 in July. A reading of 10 indicates high confidence in the economy.
American PT/MC product manufacturers posted a sales decline of 3.9 percent compared with June; sales rose 14.4 percent compared with July 2007. That was enough to boost manufacturers’ confidence by 0.1 points, to 5.4 on the 10-point scale.
North of the border, Canadian PT/MC logged a July sales gain of 2 percent compared with June; sales compared with the same period last year rose 6.4 percent. Canadian distributors confidence held steady for the sixth consecutive month at 5.7.
Canadian manufacturers’ sales decreased 3.5 percent month-on-month and 0.9 percent compared to July 2007, but their confidence index ticked up a notch, rising by 0.1 points to 5.0.
