3M to lay off 185 at Welsh adhesives plant

The 3M Corp. plans to lay off 185 workers over the next 14 months at its adhesives and tape plant in Gorseinon, Wales, the Western Mail newspaper reported.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based industrial conglomerate had mulled closing the plant altogether, but after a 90-day consultation period with the 351-employee workforce decided to downsize instead.

"We have explored all options with employees throughout the consultation period and concluded that some fundamental changes are needed if our products are to remain competitive," plant manager John Bowers told the newspaper. "We need to consolidate our manufacturing capacity in order to achieve improved economies of scale and be located closer to our key customers. Sadly, that means significant changes for our plant here."
