Sales for 84 Lumber fell 24 percent to $3.1 billion last year, compared with roughly 3.8 billion during 2006, the Home Channel News Web site reported (registration required). The building materials distributor told the Web site it laid off more than 1,000 workers in 2007, including 175 employees at its Eighty Four, Pa., headquarters and roughly 850 more at other locations.
Since 2005, 84 Lumber has shuttered 22 stores, though some were relocated or were closed because a new location opened nearby, vice president of communications Jeff Nobers told the Web site.
“Our goal is to continue to grow market share,” Nobers said, adding that the company expects to open 10 new locations this year in Illinois, Wisconsin, Arkansas, South Carolina, Florida and California.
Two other stores in Annapolis, Md., and Clarksville, Del., are expanding to double or triple their present size, adding showrooms and warehouse space, Nobers told the Web site.
