The Specialty Tools & Fasteners Distributors Assn. has heard some high-profile speakers at its annual convention over the last 10 years, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell and NBC's “Meet the Press” host Tim Russert.

This year, a lesser-known figure from the business world drew a standing ovation from the more than 5,000 people who turned out for STAFDA's 31st Annual Convention & Trade Show in Nashville. Chris Gardner, subject of the recent movie, “The Pursuit of Happyness,” wowed members with his rags-to-riches life story.

In the 1980s, Gardner and his infant son became part of the working homeless as they struggled to survive on his $1,000-a-month salary as a stockbroker trainee. In his speech, Gardner spoke about the challenge of being a single parent, his struggle with homelessness and his determination to make a better life.

Gardner went on to become one of the top stockbrokers on Wall Street, founding his own firm, Gardner Rich & Co. His story has been heard by millions thanks to the movie starring Will Smith.

Despite the wealth and acclaim he enjoys today, Gardner told STAFDA members that breaking the cycle of absentee fatherhood in his family is his proudest accomplishment.
