Machine tool consumption in the United States rose 21.7 percent in September compared with August, according to a joint report from the Assn. for Manufacturing Technology and the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Assn.Businesses spent $438.95 million on machine tools, according to the U.S. Manufacturing Technology Consumption report. That’s a 2.9 percent increase over Sept. 2006, when businesses spent $426.39 million on machine tools.
So far this year, manufacturers have spent nearly $3.1 billion on machine tools, up 6.7 percent over last year.
“Evidence that manufacturing is alive and well in the U.S. can be seen in September’s extraordinary surge in manufacturing technology orders,” AMT president John Byrd III said. “It is especially impressive that orders surpassed those placed in September of 2006, when the biennial International Manufacturing Technology Show was held in Chicago, traditionally a peak in order activity.”
