84 Lumber closed its two branches in the St. Paul and Minneapolis region, citing the absence of construction activity there, the Home Channel News Web site reported (registration required).“Building activity is almost non-existent in some of these markets,” vice president of corporate communications Jeff Nobers told the Web site.
The branches employed a total of 34 employees.
It’s the latest downsizing measure from a large national building supplies distributor as the crisis in the residential housing market continues.
Pro-Build Holdings shuttered 20 stores, Wolseley’s Stock Building Supply shut down 22 stores and cut 20 percent of its workforce—roughly 3,500 employees—and Builders FirstSource cut its workforce by 18 percent.
