WALTER's Tiger-tec cutting grades have a PVD coating

WALTER is the first precision tool manufacturer to create a PVD coating for its Tiger-tec cutting grades by applying aluminum oxide to its inserts, according to the company. Until now, aluminum oxide could only be used with CVD coatings.

WALTER's new cutting tool materials are designed specifically for use in the aerospace and power generation industries. The PVD Tiger can process titanium and titanium alloys successfully. By using aluminum oxide layers, the new cutting tool material is tough and resistant to elevated temperatures. Less chipping is produced, and cratering is reduced due to the high-temperature stability.

The materials combine the positive features of both CVD and PVD coatings. The PVD coating excels on sharp cutting edges, but it is less heat- and chemically resistant than the CVD coating, which performs well in both areas. The CVD insert cutting edges are more rounded due to thicker layers, making the edges less sharp than PVD inserts.
