Applied Acquires Spencer Industries

Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 11/1/2005

Applied Industrial Technologies acquired Spencer Industries, Inc., a regional fluid power distributor headquartered in Kent, Wash. Spencer was acquired from Wajax Income Fund of Toronto, and will operate as a subsidiary of Applied under the name Spencer Fluid Power, Inc.

Spencer distributes hydraulic components and systems, and operates nine locations with more than 150 employees throughout the western United States, including Washington, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and California. Four locations offer complete repair and service capabilities for pumps, motors and cylinders. The other five locations combine sales with service and repair capabilities.

Spencer's sales for the last 12 months are approximately $49 million, according to Applied. The company serves a broad range of customers, primarily in the lumber, mining, construction, and oil and gas industries.

Spencer's president, Jerry Randecker, will become vice president-general manager, reporting to Applied's fluid power business unit led by vice president-fluid power, Bud Hoffner.

"The addition of Spencer's nine locations, along with its experienced associates, will significantly streng-then Applied's fluid power business unit," Todd Barlett, Applied's vice president-acquisitions and global business development said in a prepared statement. "This acquisition gives Applied better geographic coverage, a strong pool of talent, and additional repair and service capabilities."
