Spouse/Companion Program & Tours

STAFDA Always Has Interesting and Exciting Tours and Speakers for Attendees' Spouses and Companions. This Year is No Different

Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 10/1/2005

Speakers Deborah Sherwood and Susan Granger will present two seminars for spouses and companions, on Sunday, Nov. 6. Sherwood's morning session, titled "Petticoat Power in the White House," will examine the role of America's First Lady, from her overseeing of the 132-room mansion and the abandonment of her privacy, to receiving criticism for seemingly everything and using her stature to promote awareness of social issues. Sherwood's interest began with her position as docent in the First Ladies Exhibit at The Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Granger's afternoon session, titled "Hollywood: Mythmaking and Moneymaking," will discuss the impact movies have had on American culture. It could be said that Granger grew up in movies, boasting a birth father who was head of production at Columbia Pictures, and an adoptive father who was a producer at MGM. Granger also is co-host of The Classic Picture Show on the American Movie Classics cable channel.

Tour 1

"Welcome to Baltimore," shares the best of Baltimore by starting with a driving tour of historic Fells Point; visiting the renowned National Aquarium of Baltimore; enjoying lunch in the Inner Harbor; viewing antique locomotives at the B & O Railroad's Mt. Clare Station; visiting nearby Fort McHenry, the sight of America's victory over the British in the War of 1812; and finishing up with a scenic drive through Federal Hill.

Tour 2

"Historic Annapolis," will take attendees through Annapolis, one of the country's most beautiful cities. One tour stop is the country's oldest state capital in continuous legislative use, the Maryland State House, also the site of George Washington's resignation as Commander in Chief in 1783. St. John's College offers architectural delights from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. After lunch, the tour visits the U.S. Naval Academy, home of 4,000 future naval leaders, where attendees also will visit the Naval Chapel, the crypt of John Paul Jones and Bancroft Hall.

Tour 3

"Welcome to Washington," takes attendees into the nation's capitol for a whirlwind tour of D.C. The tour will travel down the famous parade route, passing buildings such as the Federal Triangle, the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building, Old Post Office Pavilion and the U.S. Capitol Building. Guests will be able to tour the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall, and after lunch at Union Station, will visit the World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Korean War Veterans Memorial. Arlington National Cemetery is next on the agenda, where attendees may walk the grounds, seeing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy.
