TEMPE, ARIZ . and CAMBRIDGE, MASS. —The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) and Forrester Research, Inc. released their Report On eBusiness, which tracks online activity for both manufacturing and non-manufacturing organizations. The 2003 report is the first to indicate, since the report's development in 2000, that survey respondents purchased a higher percentage of direct materials (11.7 percent) over the Internet than indirect materials (11.0 percent). Other findings included: 41.9 percent of large companies are using more eProcurement tools (up 1.8 percent); Internet usage for requests for proposals (RFPs) was on the rise (up 4.7 percent); and online marketplaces attract 36.1 percent of non-manufacturers, who make much more online purchases now than ever before (up 4.4 percent). According to the survey findings, "despite the limited capabilities of their trading partners, 60.6 percent of companies collaborated with suppliers online, and 93 percent of companies that collaborated online either increased or maintained their level of collaboration during the last three months."
