It's time to let the secret out

Jack Keough Editor/Associate Publisher -- Industrial Distribution, 3/1/2003

Just a few years ago, one of the major problems faced by distributors was finding qualified people. The problem was especially pronounced during the time the nation experienced "full employment" and it was an employees' market, for the most part.

Turn the clock ahead and now today it's an employer's market. Many small business owners have the choice of hiring the top person for the job. It's easy to find candidates to fill positions.

Yet in our 56 th Annual Survey of Distributor Operations , finding and keeping qualified people is still listed as a major concern for distributors.

This clearly shows that distributors need to promote their industry more, something that we have recommended for some time. Few young people know about industrial distribution and what a successful career opportunity it represents. It might be industry's best-kept secret. Could I be wrong? I don't think so. In fact, the next time you're at a party and you're asked what business you're in, watch their reaction when you say industrial distribution.

Some companies are promoting the industry. Machinery Systems Inc., a machine tool distributorship in Illinois, is a founding member of the Streamwood (Ill.) High School Advisory Council. The program encourages students to prepare for careers in the metalworking industry. All high school freshmen are invited to the school's "family night" hosted by Komet of America.

One such recent meeting included a tour of the Komet manufacturing facility, dinner and speakers from those in the industry, including Joe Romanowski, the chief executive officer of MSI.

We know of several other distributors who open their buildings at night so college students can be trained to use CNC machines. Others teach classes at their local community colleges.

More companies should undertake such an assignment. It's good business sense and might be a talent pool for you in the future.
