Software supports six sigma success

Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 8/1/2002

Houston — Six sigma is a process of quality improvement that is dependent upon statistical analysis. Though six sigma is usually thought of in terms of reducing defects in manufacturing, it applies equally to improving the efficiency of businesses from call centers to airport security, says Peter Tiernan, the director of marketing for Lanner Group of Houston, Texas.

Lanner's Witness software is a simulation program used to experiment with business processes, identify bottlenecks and problem areas and optimize processes.

"Witness allows users to mirror business processes and see graphic models of where bottlenecks are and what factors contribute to them," said Tiernan. "Variables can be manipulated to hone in on the most important variable to significantly influence the output and achieve desired goals."

He said software that translates statistics into simple visual information is important. It has more impact by deciphering complex tables and data.

Six sigma can also be used to optimize any process within a business and increase efficiency. To get the best results, it is necessary to analyze a significant amount of data. The role of software is essential, says CEO Tom Plunkett of Lafayette, Colo.-based Pelion Systems.

He says early phases of six sigma programs tend to show marked quality improvement. It is difficult to remain focused on the program over the long term, however.

It is often as difficult to maintain quality improvements as it was to achieve them in the first place. Pelion offers lean flow automation software which interfaces with existing business systems to eliminate the busy work of lean programs and allow the company to focus on achieving goals, says Plunkett.

"Our solution is a metric-driven approach with modules that can be tailored to individual needs," said Plunkett. "This adds a powerful engine with a simple interface onto the existing systems."

He agrees that visual tools enhance six sigma programs. Collaboration is also essential. Collaborative Flow Manufacturing™ suite brings suppliers on board which helps to lean out the entire supply chain, adds Plunkett.
