Avnet opens technology showroom

Phoenix, Ariz.— Avnet Applied Computing, an operating group of electronics distributor Avnet, Inc., opened a Technology Showroom in Peabody, Mass. This showcase is similar to one opened in Phoenix, Ariz., in December 2000.
This showcase is attached to an electronics lab. It was developed as a way of helping OEMs produce better prototypes and to reduce the time to market. AAC's successful results in electronics may provide an example for other technical distribution markets.
AAC provides expertise and integrated solutions in PC-based components and PC technology to OEM's who are using these components in products other than PCs, said president Josh Napua.
Some of the industries using these technologies are specialized medical equipment, communication and industrial automation, he said.
"Our customers were always asking us to 'tweak' prototypes on the production floor," said Napua. "This allows us to take prototyping away from the production floor."
Manufacturers of electronic components and assemblies like microprocessor boards, monitors and drives showcase their beta and cutting-edge technologies in the showroom. Customer engineers are able to explore these technologies when they come to the lab.
"We end up using much of this new technology," said Napua. "We are asked to incorporate it into new projects and then we work out the bugs."
The showcase has been effective in leveraging AAC's relationships with both suppliers and customers, he added.
"It is a benefit to manufacturers and customers because new products are built quicker, with better technology, and go to market quicker," said Napua.
The strategy has been so successful, added Napua, that AAC is looking to develop similar locations around the country.
