Ten secrets to hiring great branch managers
By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 5/1/2000
When it comes to finding great branch managers, it can be hit or miss. Try these 10 steps recommended by distributors and industry experts.
1. Whenever possible, look internally for your branch managers and grow them up through the company.
2. If you have to tap into the labor pool remember this formula: it takes 25 interviews to find one good candidate.
3. Don't be fooled by an attractive resume. Check all references and question any claims that sound too good to be true.
4. Before promoting a salesperson to the position of branch manager, be sure that he or she has ample operations and asset management experience.
5. Seek candidates who not only have an entrepreneurial spirit, but who can also follow the established operational policies of your company.
6. Look for managers who have the confidence to make quick decisions that will coincide with the changing demands of your customers.
7. Because the branch is probably located in a different region than your headquarters, make sure your new manager knows how to adapt your corporate initiatives to their particular region.

8. If possible, avoid promoting product specialists into branch management positions: Instead of leading the team, they will spend most of their time dealing with product and customer issues.
9. Choose someone who is willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work-instead of sitting in an office delegating tasks.
10. And lastly, a branch manager's leadership skills are their best asset. Remember that a branch manager is a leader first and a manager second.
