NAHAD hosts 16th annual meeting in Monterey
By Industrial Distribution Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 3/1/2000
Monterey, Calif.--The National Assn. of Hose & Accessories Distributors will head to the Monterey Peninsula for its 16th Annual Meeting & Convention, April 8-12, 2000.Among the highlights of the convention will be the unveiling of NAHAD's Hose Assembly Guidelines. Manufacturer and distributor members have been working on the project, which aims to establish minimum industry standards for the fabrication of hose assemblies, for seven years.
"I think it's very exciting from several standpoints," said Lee Helfer, NAHAD president and president of Specialty Hose Corp. in North Canton, Ohio. "The best being that it has brought the manufacturing community of our organization, of our industry, together and they have worked long and hard to put many, many resources into what's going to be a very, very good document."
Fabricating hose assemblies is a service many NAHAD members provide customers. Realizing that there were no standards or guidelines for the process, the association formed its assembly standards committee about seven years ago to address safety and quality concerns.
"What NAHAD and the board decided ... was that we need to regulate ourselves before someone outside our industry comes in and decides to regulate us," Helfer said.
The Hose Assembly Guidelines will address flexible metal, industrial, hydraulic, composite and PTFE hose assemblies.
The other reason for Helfer's excitement about the project is that he has been involved in it from the beginning and is happy to see it completed during his NAHAD presidency.
"It was my goal as president to have these documents completed," said Helfer. "It rounds out my tenure."
In addition to the hose assembly project, Helfer points to the speaker lineup and the Monterey area as key aspects of this year's convention. Speakers include Dr. Roger Blackwell of The Ohio State University; Roger Herman, CEO of The Herman Group; David Griffith of Modern Group Ltd.; and tax expert Dr. Bart Basi. Their workshop topics will range from marketing to workplace trends to technology to company valuation.
As for the location, Helfer said: "The Monterey Peninsula is such a beautiful part of the world. The tours, and the socializing that goes along with our meeting ... all of that has been very well planned and I think it's going to be a great convention."
