Surfing the 'Net for global business

Distributors looking for help selling overseas might want to check out distributormall.com, a new Web site devoted to matching distributors and customers overseas.According to Jorge Alderete, president of Connections Las Americas, Inc., which oversees the site, distributormall.com will eventually house the names of up to three million distributors, manufacturers and customers. The first phase of operation calls for the site to act as a matchmaker between distributors and customers.
The second phase will see distributormall.com acting as an e-commerce conduit for distributors. Alderete estimates that the site will be able to handle e-commerce orders by this summer or early fall. Alderete says the firm has about 100 distributors signed up for the service. He also expects to land an initial round of venture capital shortly.
When the site becomes fully operational, distributors will be able to search a country -- and industries in that country -- to come up with potential customer bases. They can also search for distributors in that country in the event they would prefer to operate as a partnership.
"It's a distributor-centric site and we're trying to promote distributors and make sure they get exposure in terms of the global Internet opportunities available," says Alderete. "If a distributor wants to sell pumps to the chemical industry in Argentina, they can search for similar companies, and we can make the connection for them, or they can make it on their own.
"This makes it quicker and easier, and there is less risk involved for the distributor. For $3,600 (the cost of a storefront site on distributormall.com), a company is able to promote themselves globally without having to jump on a plane."
