By Jack Keough -- Industrial Distribution, 12/1/1999
In this month's issue we're pleased to present the winners of our Excellence in Distribution Awards for 1999. The winner in the small distributor category is Elisha Penniman, a $4.6 million distributor based in Connecticut; Tower Fasteners is the winner in the $10 million to $50 million category; and Purchased Parts Group is the winner for distributorships with more than $50 million in sales. An awards ceremony will take place at a reception in March in Chicago during National Manufacturing Week.
Elisha Penniman is clearly an example of the fact that you don't have to be a big distributor to be a good one. Penniman's 13 employees collectively spend more than 500 hours a year on product and sales training. The firm's technical expertise has won the respect of suppliers and customers, and the company has established an outstanding reputation for providing service to its customers in the Northeast. Elisha Penniman offers a wide array of services including just-in-time delivery, vendor managed inventory, automated order entry, 24-hour emergency service, engineering support, and electronic data interchange. The company is also working to become ISO certified.
Tower Fasteners, headquartered in Holtsville, N.Y., sells a wide range of fasteners and electronic hardware to OEM customers in the telecommunications, aerospace, medical, and metal fabricating industries. Tower has established its Tower T.I.M.E. inventory management service which has led to much of the company's growth. T.I.M.E. is the acronym for Total Inventory Management Electronically; the program allows Tower to automatically replenish customers' products based on pre-determined usage levels. The company has about 100 such programs in place. They also use technology -- both internally and externally --to increase productivity and efficiency.
Purchased Parts Group, the winner in the large distributor category, is known for its expertise in small parts management and success offering services such as contract warehousing. The company, which is headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., has become an expert in its ability to handle the supply chain for its customers
In some cases, major companies have outsourced their entire material management process to PPG. And PPG often works with customers to contribute ideas for new part designs and total cost reduction programs.
These companies clearly stand out in our industry. We're proud to recognize them for their outstanding achievements.
