DALLAS--Former President George Bush will be the keynote speaker at the Spring Convention of the American Supply & Machinery Manufacturer's Assn. and the Industrial Distribution Assn., to be held May 6-8, 2000.Some members may view Bush's presence as a political statement, given that 2000 is an election year and that Bush's son, Texas Governor George W. Bush, likely will be making a bid for the White House. But I.D.A. president Bud Pritchard, president of the Carolina Division of The Ross-Willoughby Co., says that's not the case.
"We've been trying to get George Bush for the past three to four years," says Pritchard, adding that having him in Dallas in 2000 will be exciting given the political situation. "We're pretty pumped up about it. Hopefully, it will be a well-attended convention."
ASMMA president Terry Piper is equally excited about the keynote speaker, noting that Bush's appearance continues the associations' recent trend of featuring world-renowned speakers at the Spring Convention. Bush follows on the heels of Newt Gingrich, who addressed members in San Francisco in May. Former British Prime Minister John Major was the keynote speaker in Orlando in 1998, and U.S. Gen. Colin Powell (Ret.) spoke to members in New Orleans in 1997.
"Speakers like this show that ASMMA and I.D.A. are big organizations and are important to the economy," says Piper, who is president and general manager of Precision Brand Products. "Over the last three to four years we've had some great speakers. It helps bring people to the convention and we want to continue that."
According to ASMMA, Bush's speech will be titled, Focus 21: Channeling Value into the New Millennium. He is expected to give his account of what the future holds for the United States domestically and globally in manufacturing and distribution.
The Spring Convention will be held at the Anatole Hotel in Dallas.
