Top 100
By Industrial Distribution Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 6/1/1999
Once again, it's Top 100 time, when INDUSTRIAL DISTRIBUTION reveals the biggest distributors in the industry. In the following pages, you'll find summaries of the top 100 distributors -- ranked by 1998 revenues -- as well as a profile of No. 52 IBT, Inc., an independent power transmission house that turns 50 this fall. As usual, W.W. Grainger maintained its stranglehold atop the list, with sales of $4.3 billion. Grainger has occupied the top spot since ID began publishing the study in 1991.This is ID's third annual list of the Top 100 distributors. We expanded the list from the Top 50 in 1997, in order to provide a more accurate picture of who the key players are in the industry. As in the past, we have provided in-depth summaries of the first 50 companies on the list. As was the case last year, the list was altered by the consolidation raging through the industry, as several players were dropped from the list after merging with other firms, and newcomers were added.
The 1999 Top 100 was compiled by editors John Johnson, Victoria Fraza, Ken Brack, Susan Srikonda and Sara Procknow. For reprints please contact Duane Billek at 847-390-2784.
