Providing information is key to success
By John J Keough -- Industrial Distribution, 6/1/1999
In his last address as the president of the Industrial Distribution Assn., Sam Mitchell correctly pointed out that the successful distributors of tomorrow will be the ones who provide information for their customers, not those who just provide product. This is a subtle but important shift in the distribution channel. Never has the thirst for information been as strong as it is today. At Industrial Distribution magazine, information is paramount to our success as we provide you with articles and columns each month focusing on trends occurring in the distribution channel. We also have invested heavily in technology and were the first in our industry to establish a Web site five years ago. Last month we provided online coverage of ASMMA/I.D.A.'s national spring convention and will be doing so at other meetings later this year.
We are taking another step to leverage our technology to provide you with additional real-time information, as Cahners Business Information has unveiled the next generation of its manufacturing Web site. (www.manufacturing.net)
The new site delivers critical decision-making content to support the entire manufacturing process/supply chain, from design through implementation and delivery. The site combines editorial content from the company's 23 industry-leading manufacturing/distribution publications with five vertical communities of interest, customized news feeds, a stock index, original editorial analysis, and other forms of content.
In addition, the site offers a global search tool that eases navigation and gives users access to publication archives, directory listings and customized daily news from the LEXIS-NEXIS information service. Central to the site is the Manufacturing Yellow Pages, a directory of more than 58,000 products, services and suppliers. Users may search by company name, product name, trademark or keyword to access company and product information.
And speaking of product information, we're pleased to announce that the Industrial Distribution Assn. has selected Industrial Distribution magazine to publish a series of product training manuals. The manuals are designed for the entry-level employee and will provide basic information about specific products. The first module covering saw blades will be published in November. Other modules will be published every two months and the program will be completed within two years.
