Glen Ellyn, Ill.--The Bearing Specialists Assn. recently announced its Certified Bearing Specialist program, the goal of which is to certify inside and outside salespeople worldwide as bearing specialists.Initiated at BSA's 1997 annual convention, the program was officially unveiled in March during National Manufacturing Week in Chicago.
According to BSA, a bearing specialist is someone with "excellent knowledge in the selection, application, and analysis of bearings." The purpose of the CBS program is to ensure that certified bearing specialists have the knowledge and skills needed to provide effective service and solutions for customers. Candidates for the program include sales engineers, service engineers, applications engineers, field service technicians, bearing technical support specialists, outside and inside sales reps, and account managers.
"We [bearing distributors] add tremendous value in terms of application assistance," Peter Fitzpatrick, chairman of BSA's Certification Advisory Committee and its Educational Services Committee, said. "We do a lot more than stock, sell and ship."
To become a certified bearing specialist, candidates must pass an exam administered by the National Institute for Certification Engineering Technologies. BSA worked with Dr. James Sullivan of Southern Illinois University to develop the exam, along with the program's criteria and study guide.
So far, eight industry professionals have been certified. They are: Don Aucoin and Christian Vadeboncoeur of MBS Bearing Service; Leon Bender, Jr. of Minnesota Bearing Co.; LeRoy Burcroff of Bearing Service, Inc.; Doug Brown, Kenneth Knott, and Charles Nicholson of Bearings & Drives; and Brian Labus of Bearing Headquarters.
