Member volunteers shape and manage NAHAD's ongoing activities
By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 4/1/1999
Throughout the year, the ongoing work of developing and delivering NAHAD member benefits and services is carried out by the association's committees, comprised of member volunteers and supported by the NAHAD headquarters staff. Over the past year, the following committees have served the association and its members:The Executive Committee, chaired by association president Tom Slater, acts on behalf of the full board of directors between normally scheduled semi-annual board meetings. The committee's membership includes NAHAD's officers, the executive vice president and the immediate past president. Meetings are held in January and in the summer of each year.
The Executive Committee also serves as the Nominating Committee, under the leadership of past president Al Talbot. The committee oversees the annual nomination and election process, guided by board-approved procedures, to recruit eligible members to serve on the board of directors.
Treasurer Chuck Connors chairs the Finance Committee, which works with the NAHAD staff to develop the annual operating budget, manage the association's investment portfolio and produce monthly and quarterly finance reports and the annual audit.
NAHAD's Training & Education Committee, chaired by John Mork, oversees the development of a variety of member services provided through the association's ResourCenter, on display at the Annual Meeting. This complete library of educational resources, training videos, workbooks and seminars includes the latest programs designed specifically to address issues facing distributors today. With the support of its vendor partners, including Majec Training Consultants, Corporate Strategies, Inc., NAW, Profiles Plus and many others, NAHAD provides members with a competitive edge.
Through its support of collaborative efforts, including the Association Education Alliance and the University of Industrial Distribution, NAHAD is able to offer valuable training opportunities and access to important information and services.
A major new initiative begun in 1998 is the development of the NAHAD Institute, a comprehensive package of member services designed to help member companies define employee job requirements, design and deliver appropriate and specific training and education support for each employee, and evaluate and measure the results of the training. A curriculum development manual, recently completed, will be tested in 1999, with final rollout in 2000.
The Scholarship Subcommittee, chaired by John Wulff, provides annual grants to ID students at Western Carolina University, the University of Houston and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Additional annual scholarship grants are provided to NAHAD member employees enrolled in a college business degree program.
The Assembly Standards Committee is guided by chairman James Brown and co-chair Mike Armbruster, and is charged with developing guidelines for the fabrication of hose assemblies in order to improve the safety and quality of finished products. As one of NAHAD's largest and active committees, five different advisory subcommittees addressing specific product segments are supported by a large number of manufacturer and distributor members. The Flexible Metal Hose Assembly Standard was developed in 1996. By mid 1999, the committee will likely complete the development of fabrication standards for Hydraulic, Composite and Teflon® hose assemblies. The industrial hose standard will follow later in the year.
Communications Committee chair Lee Helfer oversees the production of NAHAD's bi-monthly NAHAD NEWS newsletter, the annual membership directory, and the annual convention materials, and coordinates ongoing communications efforts with members. In addition, the committee maintains regular contacts with the trade press and updates the database listings of all member companies.
Manufacturer/Associate Liaisons Bill Harr, Jim Parrish and Bill Collins provide a link between NAHAD's manufacturer and associate members and the board of directors. The liaisons assist in establishing open communication lines between members, coordinating the assignments of tables at the annual Contact Table Program and developing the annual Manufacturer & Associate Council Meeting.
Joe Thompson, chairman of the Membership Committee, reviews all applications for membership, assisted by a three-person review panel and 11 region captains covering the United States and Canada. The committee conducts an annual recruitment campaign and advises the board on matters of membership policy and procedure.
NAHAD's Management Information Committee, chaired by Joe Mika, coordinates several projects annually, including the Executive Forum Program for member company CEO's and COO's, the Excess Inventory Reports (published three times a year) and regular studies and reports on industry compensation programs and operating performance measures.
The Technology Committee, chaired by Clyde Cox, is charged with coordinating the association's efforts in developing technology-based services including the development of NAHAD's Web site and related electronic commerce programs. The NAHAD Web site (www.nahad.org) offers electronic access to the association's resources while also providing links to members' Web sites.
The International Committee, chaired by Ed Loke, works to assist members in pursuing international business opportunities through the development of information resources and the collection of data related to international hose markets. The committee will also consider hosting overseas trade missions and exhibiting with member companies at international trade shows.
NAHAD members are invited to support the association's efforts by serving on any of the committees. Please contact the NAHAD office for further information, (800) 624-2227.
