Remembering an old friend
By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 2/1/1999
Dear Jack:Reading your editorial regarding older workers, the part about the 82-year-old salesman with 50 years of experience caught my eye. I have to believe you were talking about our very own Bill Elmendorf.
There were times as a 'hot-shot' young sales manager, that I had doubts about having a 'vintage' sales rep on board. Fortunately, under the steady hand and guidance of my father, we saw the benefits of having Bill as part of our organization.
Today, six years after his death, I find that I still sincerely miss his positive attitude and perspective. At 82, he did not need to be told about change...he had lived it, and adapted, and been successful through more change and challenge than I'll ever see.
Your feature article on him in December of 1991, meant more than you'll ever know. The plaque with that magazine cover still hangs in our lobby, as a constant reminder of how fortunate we were to have had the opportunity to know Bill. I'm sure you remember the story of his funeral. The magazine cover was on an easel next to the casket, the minister quoted from your article. Powerful stuff.
I'd take ten more just like him in a minute. Your editorial is right on the mark.
