ISO 9000 Building Quality at a Cost
By Staff -- Industrial Distribution, 1/1/1999
Industrial Distribution is pleased to kick off the new year with this special report on ISO 9000. We started the tradition in 1997 in response to a growing concern in the industry over quality issues. ISO 9000 is the prime tool for measuring quality, as it is an internationally recognized standard controlled by the International Organization for Standardization. As we enter the 21st century, quality continues to be an important issue for distributors, though the time and cost involved with implementing ISO 9000 can prove to be deterrents for many companies. In the following pages, ID takes an in-depth look at these and other issues. Our first story presents an overview of the quality movement, focusing on how the pace of ISO 9000 certification has slackened in the last year. Industry leaders cite time and cost concerns as primary problems and are looking for ways to lower certification costs and re-ignite that pace. Our second story highlights the results of an exclusive ID survey on ISO 9000, conducted in November. The survey polled certified and non-certified distributors to get an industry pulse on the issue.
Our final story features interviews with ISO certified distributors and manufacturers who reveal why they decided to go through the process and what benefits, if any, they have received as a result of obtaining certification.
